Is Lonza recommending that customers use CHO cell lines instead of NS0 cell lines for protein expression?

No. We undertook a programme of work to develop the GS System™ for use with CHO cell lines, and bring it into line with the performance of our GS-NS0 system. We believe that the results that we have generated will now enable our customers to choose the most appropriate host cell line based on their product requirements. The table below allows an ‘at-a-glance’ comparison of the CHO and NS0 systems:

Host Cell Line NS0 CHO
Antibody Product Concentration (highest to date at Lonza) 1.9 g/L 5.5 g/L
Speed to selected cell line 6 months fast-track, chemically-defined, animal component-free 5 months fast-track, chemically-defined, animal component-free
Consistency of product concentration Cell lines stable without selective agents Cell lines stable with selective agents
Products Generally antibodies Therapeutic proteins, including antibodies
Glycosylation See FAQ ‘ What is the difference between using NS0 or CHO cells for preparation of antibodies?’ See FAQ ‘ What is the difference between using NS0 or CHO cells for preparation of antibodies?’
Intellectual Property Due diligence should be undertaken whichever host cell line is considered Due diligence should be undertaken whichever host cell line is considered
