The products involved are EPA registered and have a long history of successful use by doctors, staff and the general public.
• The claims Lonza makes are accurate and EPA compliant.
• Lonza is part of an industry coalition working with the EPA to adopt revisions for the test methodologies currently in use.
Allendale, NJ – May 21, 2007 - On Thursday, May 17, 2007, the Region 2 office of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a press release concerning three of Lonza’s disinfectant products. Lonza has, for some months, been working with the EPA to resolve the questions they raised regarding the efficacy of these products. Among other things, Lonza’s concerns relate to the testing procedures the EPA is using to make their efficacy determination. These technical discussions are ongoing. Lonza is the recognized global-leading supplier of microbial control products in the environmental hygiene arena. Lonza’s products kill germs that can adversely affect the health and welfare of people and animals. The products involved are EPA registered products and have a long history of successful use by doctors, staff and the general public. That record of performance continues. The issue Lonza is working through with the EPA involves the efficacy testing procedures and aspects of them that have been called into question by recent research. Here’s what we know:
• Lonza is part of an industry coalition working with the EPA to adopt revisions for the test methodologies currently in use.
• Numerous peer reviewed scientific studies have demonstrated modifications of the current test methods are necessary to improve reliability.
• From Lonza’s perspective, the products in question are as reliable today as they have been for many years. They can be relied upon by customers and users. The claims Lonza makes are accurate and EPA compliant. Lonza expects that customers using supplemental registrations of Lonza’s formulated products can rely on what the labels say and the testing that backs up those claims.
• The specific products in question, and tested, used Lonza ingredients but were manufactured by Lonza customers. • At the time that the EPA Region 2 complaint was filed, settlement discussions had been scheduled at the regional EPA office for early June. Lonza expects those meetings to be held. A formal response to EPA’s complaint will be filed in the near future.
Lonza’s goal in working with the EPA is to establish clear, specific and reliable test methods backed up by scientific study. Further updates, if any, will be available on Lonza’s Web site, www.lonza.com
