| Swiss Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard attends topping-out ceremony of new Lonza plant in Nansha, China |
Basel, 14.07.2007 – The Swiss Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard honored today the Lonza premises in Nansha Guangzhou, China, with her presence. The Head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs attended a traditional Chinese ceremony which commemorates the build-out of a new multi-purpose active pharmaceutical ingredients production plant of Lonza. Federal Councillor Leuthard was accompanied by a delegation of local governmental officials along with Swiss representatives of industry and commerce as well as Swiss and Chinese journalists. In her speech, Federal Councillor Leuthard said: “With its new facility, Lonza not only strengthens its presence in China, but is able to reinforce Switzerland as an economic center.”
“The visit of Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard is a privilege for us and marks a great milestone in our 12-year presence in China. It demonstrates that we are on the right track. With planned investments of USD 170 million in the next five years we believe in China as a business location. Based on the great achievements of our Chinese organization during the past years, I fully expect that Lonza China will have even greater success in the future”, said Lukas Utiger, Lonza’s Head of Organic Fine & Performance Chemicals, representing the Lonza Management Committee at the event.
Lonza’s celebration of the new multi-purpose large scale plant for the production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) is a critical step in the continued development of the strategy for the Exclusive Synthesis business sector. The Lonza operation in Nansha Guangzhou was established in April 2003. The premises cover an area of 140.000 m2 which houses production for Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) and a state-of-the-art R&D facility. A small scale plant for APIs is close to completion. The further sites of Lonza in China are located in Guangzhou, Liyang and Nanjing.
