Zürich - Eli Lilly and Company announced on June 29th, 2000 that an interim analysis found that the placebo-controlled trial results for the therapeutic potential of recombinant human activated protein C in the treatment of severe sepsis met predefined criteria for reduced mortality.

Lilly is hopeful the results of the full evaluation of the data will support a submission to regulatory authorities for approval of Zovant.

On June 10, 1997, Lilly entered into a manufacturing agreement with Lonza for Zovant. Under this contract Lonza Biologics has provided services to help optimise and scale-up the manufacturing process for Zovant. For this purpose, a pilot plant in Slough, UK, was installed to facilitate this work. Based on extensive laboratory and scale up efforts by both companies, Lonza Biologics designed and installed c-GMP manufacturing capacity in its multi purpose facility in Portsmouth NH, which will be dedicated to the manufacture of Zovant.

"We are delighted with the success that Lilly has achieved in discovering and developing this much needed treatment for an often fatal disease," said Sergio Marchionne, Chief Executive Officer of Lonza Group. "The manufacturing partnership with Lilly is further confirmation of our strong commitment to our pharmaceutical customers in providing exclusive, leading edge solutions to their innovative product requirements."
