Zurich - Lonza Group announces new organizational structure following completion of strategic review.

The Board of Directors and Management of Lonza have concluded an extensive review of the strategic options available to the Group. It is believed that the most value-accretive alternative requires the focussing of Lonza Group on the life sciences sector, by fully utilizing and further developing its biotechnology and chemicals capabilities. Lonza Group is already a world-recognized supplier to the pharmaceutical and agrochemicals industries, and holds other significant positions in the production of intermediates for the wider life sciences markets.

The combination of this long established reputation and the technological arsenal currently and potentially available to Lonza Group is the basis upon which this new strategy is to be founded. Organic growth opportunities are believed to be abundant in the chosen markets, especially in the areas of custom manufacturing and biotechnology, and the Group believes that it is ideally suited to leverage them.

Consistent with these objectives, the Group is re-aligning its management structure to properly highlight the importance of technology as a platform for future growth, and to create a performance-driven delineation of businesses which, given the ultimate composition of the portfolio, more adequately reflects the relevant market dynamics.

The following appointments are made, effective immediately.

R. H. Rupp, currently Head of Exclusive Synthesis and Biotechnology, is being promoted to Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chief Technology Officer for the Group, reporting to the CEO.

The business sectors will be headed up by the following individuals, also reporting to the Chief Executive Officer.

G. Schreiner, Head of Exclusive Synthesis, R. Imwinkelried, Head of Biotec and B. In-Albon Head of Organic Fine Chemicals will continue in their current roles based in Basle. G. Williams will continue to head up Performance Chemicals based in Fairlawn, NJ.

The Polymer Intermediates businesses will continue to be headed by
S. Marchionne until completion of the divestiture program. The Energy business, also targeted for divestiture, will continue to be managed by R. Dirren.

Effective March 1, 2001 the corporate offices of Lonza Group will move from Zurich to Lonza's Basle facilities.
