| Gerhart Schreiner, Head of the Business Sector Exclusive Synthesis, has elected to retire per November 30, 2001. Lukas Utiger has been appointed as his successor. Markus Gemuend will become Head of Lonza Biologics.

Gerhart Schreiner (63), Senior Vice President and Head of the Business Sector Exclusive Synthesis, has elected to retire effective November 30, 2001.
Dr. Schreiner has been with Lonza in numerous functions for nearly 36 years. He began his career at our facility in Visp as an R&D chemist and advanced through various positions, including managing director of R&D and since 1997 as Head of Exclusive Fine Chemicals with worldwide responsibility.
With his excellent contacts throughout the industry, Dr. Schreiner has made an invaluable contribution to the success of Lonza Group and its transformation into a leading supplier position to the life sciences industry. The Group is thankful for his past efforts and extends him its best wishes for the future.

Appointment of the Head of Business Sector Exclusive Synthesis

Effective August 1, 2001, Lukas Utiger (38), currently head of Research and Development for the Exclusive Synthesis business, will assume responsibility for the Sector succeeding Dr. Schreiner.
Dr. Utiger holds degrees in Chemical Engineering from Zurich and London and joined Lonza out of ICI in 1992. He has held a number of positions in the Group, and was appointed Head of Research and Development for the Exclusive Synthesis Sector in 2000.
We are fully confident that Dr. Utiger together with the Exclusive Synthesis team will continue to build on the strong leadership position that the Sector currently enjoys in serving the world's most successful pharmaceutical and agrochemical companies.

New Head of the Business Sector Lonza Biologics

Effective August 1, 2001, Markus Gemuend (43) will assume the position of Head of the Lonza Biologics Business Sector. The mammalian cell culture business is considered to be one of the Group's key and fastest growing activities in serving the life sciences market. Lonza Group is reinforcing its commitment to the Sector by committing substantial capital to a four-fould expansion of capacities, mainly in the US.
Mr. Gemuend has more than 13 years of achievement within Lonza Group in different functions, having recently assumed responsibility for the Exclusive Synthesis business in the US, including the operations in Riverside and Los Angeles.
We are convinced that Mr.Gemuend, together with the strong Lonza Biologics team will successfully drive the development.
Dr. Utiger and Mr. Gemuend will report to the Chief Executive Officer.
