| Lonza Group will propose Sir Richard Sykes as a member of its Board of Directors |
| The Board of Directors of Lonza Group is pleased to announce that it will propose the addition of Sir Richard Sykes as a director of the company at its next Annual Shareholders' meeting on 26 March 2003. |
Sir Richard Sykes (61), currently Rector of Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, was Chairman of GlaxoSmithKline plc until May 2002, and its Chief Executive until October 1997. Sir Richard Sykes brings with him some 30 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries acquired since being awarded a PhD in Microbial Biochemistry from Bristol University and a DSc from the University of London.
"I am delighted that Sir Richard Sykes has accepted to join us on the Board of Lonza" stated Sergio Marchionne, Chairman of the Board of Lonza Group Ltd. "His contributions will substantially strengthen our Board in guiding and supporting the executive leadership in the implementation of its life sciences objectives" added Marchionne.
All current members of the Board of Directors will stand for re-election.
As previously announced, Mr. Peter Matter will also be proposed for election at the next shareholders' meeting.
