Lonza strategy
Lonza's strategy for the next four to six years will focus on sustained, above-average, profitable growth through its various chemical and biotechnology platforms. Lonza's targets are to realign and focus on defined life sciences markets, thereby improving global presence and controlling the value chain. Our strategy is aimed at reducing the risk profile and the volatility of Lonza's businesses.
Our strategy is to target the life-science industry with two fundamental technologies: chemistry and biotechnology. Using these two technologies, we offer both products and custom manufacturing services to the pharmaceutical, biotech, and life-science industry. By concentrating on the development of our offerings, and active portfolio management that includes strategic acquisitions and divestitures, we deliver strong, sustainable profitable growth. In 2007, both strategic elements were demonstrated. The company spent more than CHF 500 million in capital expenditure to add new equipment and build new plants to better serve our customers. We also added to our biotechnology offering, with the acquisition of the Bioscience business and new microbial biopharmaceutical operations in February 2007. And because the isophthalic acid business did not fit to the core life-science customer base, the company made contractual arrangements to completely divest these operations in late 2007. Our passion is to deliver sustainable value to our customers. This vision underpins our strategy and all of our actions. By concentrating on the offerings that provide sustainable value to our customers, we are able to target areas of the market in which we can add value. By focusing on delivering value, we develop a culture of reliability and trustworthiness that our customers count on. And by being passionate about our work, we create an environment with employees who care about their work, their products, and their customers
