1. What is your current role at Lonza? I am in the second year apprentice at Lonza which means that I started working right after school. My objective is to receive the diploma as a chemical laboratory assistant. At the moment I work in the analytics where we test if products are pure or if there are some by-products in it. As an apprentice I get the chance to change de department every 3 to 6 months to learn new things. I remark that I get already more responsibilities now that I am in the second year. I can read protocols independently and when I execute reactions or make other work in the lab somebody looks that I am doing the right thing. Beside the job I get 1 ½ day of theoretical training.
2. Why do you like working at Lonza? As Apprentice? I like the compensation I get at Lonza. I am happy that I am paid for the work I do, because I know other companies where apprentices don’t earn anything during the first two years. Furthermore I have the feeling that collaborators and supervisors take us apprentices seriously. We have an apprentice representation and I am part of that. We can give ideas, tell our opinion and we help organizing some excursions or workshops. Other apprentices can approach us with their concerns and problems and we then try to help them.
3. Which was your most amazing experience? My most amazing experience was when I got the results of the competency test I had to do before joining Lonza. I was glad that I passed the exam and could join Lonza as an apprentice. I am expecting to have a similar experience when I will have my diploma as laboratory assistant in my hands.
4. What do you like doing in your free time? I like sport very much. I play badminton and often go biking. I also play music in a “Guggenmusig”. This is a music group that plays at carnival in Switzerland.
5. What is your motto of life? I just know my motto in French, because I am bilingual. It is: „Ne jamais remettre au lendemain.” Which means: “A stitch in time saves nine.”

1. What is your current role at Lonza? Currently I am doing an apprenticeship as chemical laboratory assistant at Lonza Visp. My apprenticeship consists of two parts; the first is the on-the-job training. Three days a week I’m working in a laboratory, I have the opportunity to change my laboratory every six months. This allows me to experience the variety of my job. In my apprenticeship as chemical laboratory assistant I get to know the analysis, development, and the quality control labs. This way I can improve my practical skills. The second part is furthering education. Two days a week I attend school. One day I am in class with 14 other apprentices for laboratory assistant. There we study in occupational classes. The other day I attend an optional technical college; with a degree from the technical college I can go to a college/university and study for a bachelor/masters degree. I just started my third year and I am preparing for my final apprentice examination, which I am taking in June of 2010.
2. Why do you like working at Lonza? As Apprentice? I enjoy working at Lonza because every year they give young people the opportunity to make their dreams come true, when they give them the chance to start an apprenticeship. I got my opportunity three years ago and realized quickly what great of a chance I got with that apprenticeship. It is not common that young people can work in a laboratory age 16. I like to work in Lonza because I can work in science and I can still follow my dreams in getting higher degrees. Other than the educational aspects of my job, I like to see new things about a chemical factory and meeting new people. The social environment here is nice. I truly believe this apprenticeship has put me in the right place for the present as well as the future.
3. Which was your most amazing experience? My most amazing experience was my year abroad in the United States of America 07-08. I started my apprenticeship ’06 and applied by Lonza for a year abroad, and got it. In June’07 I arrived in Wisconsin, USA through AFS. For a year I experienced a different culture by going to a High School, living in an American family, and spending my free time with a variety of different people. Additionally I had time to travel around and got to visit New York City, Chicago, and Colorado.
4. What do you like doing in your free time? In my free time I like to be active, that is why I play soccer and unihockey in Bürchen. It is not professional, but I like to spend time with my friends in sports. In winter I often go skiing. Besides sports I like meeting new people and I like to travel.
5. What is your motto of life? My life's motto If there’s a will there’s a way" is. I live by this quote because I know that it is possible to achieve anything if you are willing to work for it. With enough motivation and determination there’s nothing that can’t be done.
