1. What is your current role at Lonza? My current role is Senior Operator in large scale Purification at the Portsmouth, NH site. The Portsmouth site is part of the Biologics manufacturing unit, and specializes in manufacturing custom proteins that fight various autoimmune diseases and cancers. I’m currently responsible for helping the supervisor keep the shift running on track, as well as operate, troubleshoot, and train others on all technical aspects of the Purification area.
2. Why do you like working at Lonza? How is the working environment? First, and foremost, the people. The people at the Portsmouth site provide a very enjoyable, and challenging working environment. Everyone is very friendly, and there is an open door policy employed throughout the site. I feel comfortable stopping by the office of anyone, at any level, to pitch an idea or express an opinion. That is definitely a luxury I feel privileged to have. Second, the encouragement of new ideas and potential improvements from anyone in the facility. It is also highly encouraged that the innovator takes the idea from suggestion through implementation. This allows people an opportunity to think outside the box, and try new things that aren’t within their typical job description. Opportunities like these present new challenges, keep the job interesting, and can potentially lead to a new path of development in other departments.
3. What are some perks about working at Lonza? The 12 hour rotating shift work is my personal favorite. The 12 hour work days are long, but we get 15 days off a month, and if scheduled right we only need to take 2 vacation days to have an entire 7 days off. That’s a ton of time off for personal enjoyment.
4. What makes Lonza unique? From a manufacturing perspective, I would definitely say the versatility required from the operators on the floor. Due to the nature of the contract manufacturing business we have a facility built with the aim of supporting a wide variety of processing requirements. The operators not only need to know the facility in depth, but also each individual process and the challenges they present. The success of Lonza in over the years is really a testament to the ability of the core manufacturing staff to understand and be able to adapt to each unique process.
5. Please tell us about an amazing experience you have had at Lonza. I was lucky enough to be sent to Singapore on a 6 week work assignment in 2009. It was my first time outside of the USA, and an overall very fun experience. I learned a little about another culture, tried some ethnic food I’d never been exposed to before, and made some friends at work I still talk to occasionally to this day.
6. What do you like doing in your free time? When there isn’t 3 feet of snow on the ground I love to golf, barbeque, and fish. When there is 3 feet of snow on the ground I like to take vacations to San Diego, California (my original hometown) where there is never snow on the ground and I can still golf, barbeque, and fish.
7. What is your motto? Personally, I’m not much for cheesy slogans. However, I definitely believe in a strong work ethic, honestly loving and seeing purpose in what you do, and balancing that with personal enjoyment in life as it’s too short to take for granted.
8. What did you do prior to joining Lonza? Spent 3 years at another big biotech firm starting in San Diego, CA and then transferring to Research Triangle Park, NC. Before that, I delivered pizza for Papa John’s.

1. What is your current role at Lonza? I am an operator in the launch plant in Visp, Switzerland, which is part of Lonza’s Exclusive Synthesis (LES) business. We produce pharmaceutical ingredients for different medicines fighting against asthma, diabetes etc. We also produce feed ingredients.
2. Why do you like working at Lonza? I was unemployed for two years before I joined Lonza, and I already aimed to work for Lonza a long time before. I tried several times to apply but it didn’t work until the last time where I got the job as an operator. I was really happy about that. I enjoy shift work because I get more time for my family and my hobbies. I especially like working during the night. I am also happy that I can work quite independently.
3. Please tell me about an amazing experience you have had at Lonza. The first day when I was guided through the launch plant I could hardly believe it. There were so many pipelines, valves and systems that I thought I would never be able to run such a complex facility. At the same time our boss asked us, “What do you think? Will you get that?” We all answered, “Yes, of course.” And indeed, in the end I must say, that if you want to you can learn a lot. After two or three months, I already knew my way around the plant.
4. What do you like doing in your free time? I raise Ehringer cattle. These are black cows that fight with each other to determine the pecking order (dominance hierarchy). These cows are very strong, but they don’t hurt each other while fighting. As a raiser, I must improve muscle formation and do condition training with the cows. I am happy that my wife and my two children support this hobby; otherwise, I couldn’t have 19 Ehringer cows in two stables. For eleven years I have also been the commandant of the Lord God infantrymen (Herrgottsgrenadiere). At the feast of Corpus Christi we march in the old Valasian war uniform in front of the procession to accompany the priest holding the body of Christ in his hand.
