Markus Müller - Project Manager, Basel, Switzerland

1. What is your current role at Lonza?
I am a project manager for group-wide projects in the area of financial controlling, compliance and business intelligence tools. I stay in contact to all Lonza subsidiaries worldwide on a monthly basis for the financial reporting as well as in global projects with project teams which are usually composed of colleagues from all sectors and regions.

2. What is your special (also regional) benefit about working at Lonza?
Lonza offices are in Basel, an attractive city to live and work.

3. What makes you stay at Lonza?
Here I found many nice, friendly and interesting colleagues. It is fun and challenging to work with most of them.

4. How do you perceive the working climate at Lonza?

The climate is open and friendly. After working many years for Lonza it is difficult to compare to other companies. But the fact that I stayed so many years, probably says it all.

5. Which was your most amazing experience?
During the last ten years Lonza made a dramatic change and renewed most of the organization as well as its products. It was amazing to see how the focus changed from a Swiss-centred company to a global player.

Daphne Chen - Financial Controller, China

1. What is your current role at Lonza?
I am a financial comtroller for Lonza’s Exclusive Synthesis (LES) division in China. I report to both the local management team and the sector controller for LES operational performance each month.

2. Why do you like working at Lonza?
First, Lonza is a highly innovative and rapidly growing company. Lonza China has grown up very fast since it was opened in 1995. As an employee in Lonza China, I have to meet challenges of different situations and need to be able to work under pressure. At the same time, I can benefit a lot from these unique experiences. Second, Lonza is an international company. It is simply marvellous for me to work with people with different cultures, languages, ideas and backgrounds.

3. How do you perceive the working climate at Lonza?
I feel the working climate in Lonza is as follows:
- mutual respect, trust and integrity
- innovative and open
- highly engaged and motivated
- comfortable and supportive.

4. Which was your most amazing experience?
As a key user of SAP Fi/Co module in Lonza China at that time, I experienced the setting-up of its SAP system from 2005 to 2006. We needed to discuss many details by phone with our colleagues in Switzerland and external consultants in Germany. Because there is a 6-hour time gap between China and Europe, and we often needed to solve the unexpected issues, we frequently had to work day and night. It is hard to believe that we finally got all the things done in time. It is a marvel to me that I could survive so many challenges. Though I lost a lot of family time and was really exhausted, I benefited immensely from these experiences, and it was really good for my personal and professional growth.
