Rick Mommers - Business Development

Rick Mommers - Business Development

1. What is your current role at Lonza?
I am responsible for Business Development for Biochemicals in the business unit Biological Manufacturing and I am one of the three statutory agents of Lonza Biotec s.r.o.

2. Why do you like working at Lonza?
Lonza has a very open structure, low level of directive control and allows for development in the direction of interest. My daily contacts are divided in two groups, firstly of product managers and technologists and secondly our sales and Business Development representatives and customers. With both I enjoy a very open communication without too much bureaucracy and with a high level of change.

3. What makes Lonza unique?

I think Lonza is one of the few companies where changes can be communicated and approved in a real fast way. In the past we secured business by this way which I think we would have missed with a less flexible management.

4. What is your track record?
Some 15 years ago, after completing my studies at the Institute of Chemical Technology in Delft I started at Lonza as a Technologist in the fermentation lab in the Czech Republic. As I was focussed mainly on one product I moved with that product after two years in to the 50m3 fermentation plant. In that plant I introduced some more products and lead two mid size investments as project manager. In 2003, I joined the 75m3 biopharma fermentation plant build out team as enduser. During 2004, a management change made me end up in the site executive committee and having the responsibility for our 5 production lines with 180 people and product management. After the start up of our pharma enzymes project I headed the PM group for two years. In February 2010, after the reorganization I joined the BD team for Biological Manufacturing with a special focus on biochemicals.
