Organization

Safety, health and environmental protection are perceived as concrete opportunities for value creation, strengthening the confidence of customers, business partners, shareholders and the public at large. Guided by the Group function Corporate SHE which is also responsible for the Group SHE policy, SHE coordination, audit control and emergency communication, SHE officers on regional and site level support line management in its demanding task to implement the internal SHE standards as well as guaranteeing the legal compliance with local applicable laws and regulations.
Continual improvement in the SHE area requires far-sighted planning, painstaking implementation and effective monitoring of the measures. Standards are developed and implemented at the production sites on the basis of the SHE policy that is valid across the Group. Having intensified its support and monitoring activities, the organization of regional SHE coordinators introduced in 2004 has proven its value and is to be continued. This SHE coordination team led by corporate SHE issued a modified risk profile matrix for benchmarking process risk analyses. The matrix is valid worldwide within the Group and binding on all production sites. Lonza is confident it will help further reduce the risks associated with our production processes and infrastructure installlations. |
Standards and Internal Regulations
Line Management at each site is responsible for maintaining the site specific SHE management system including the associated SHE standards, work instructions and operating procedures.
A set of corporate guidelines in the area of SHE defines the frame and sets the rules for proper management of safety, health and environmantal protection: |

Auditing
SHE performance audits are carried out at regular intervals, typically three years, at all production sites. They cover all aspects of safety, health and environmental protection, and serve to monitor whether compliance with internal and external standards is achieved. These audits are conducted by internal independent experts by means of management interviews and site inspections and are based on a comprehensive and systematically compiled checklist. All audit findings are documented and a detailed follow-up action plan is required.
Emergency management
Lonza is well prepared to handle the inherent risks of chemical manufacturing. All sites have established their local emergency organization (LEO) to deal with incidents and emergency situations. Alongside the presence of the technical measures to fight an emergency, the LEOs are well organized and regularly trained for their tasks. The potential risk scenarios are discussed and managed in a structured and systematic manner to ensure immediate action and minimize harm to people and damage to property, equipment and the environment.
In addition to the LEOs, Lonza has established a central emergency communications group. Its tasks are to ensure a correct, consistent and timely information of Group management and external bodies. Although our two-stage emergency management organization has proven to be effective and we believe that Lonza is able to adequately deal with potential emergencies and is constantly working on the optimization of our response teams and its organization to further optimize our preparedness.

Certification
Lonza requires its operational units to have a performance oriented comprehensive safety, health and environmental management system in place. However, the Group does not require the sites to have their system certified. The decision for certification may depend on customer needs, as well as general market and business opportunities. Several production sites of the Group are certified according to internationally recognized standards for environmental management (ISO 14000 series) or occupational health and safety management (OHSAS 18000 series).
